What Is an IP Rating?
IP stands for Ingress Protection. It's an international standard (IEC 60529) that defines how well a device is protected against solid particles (like dust) and liquids (like rain). The rating has two digits: the first covers dust protection, the second covers water protection.

IPX5 vs IPX6: What's the Real Difference?
Both ratings protect against rain, but IPX6 handles more powerful water jets — think heavy downpours, puddle splashes from passing cars, or high-pressure road spray at speed. For most cyclists, IPX5 is sufficient. For commuters and all-weather riders, IPX6 gives extra peace of mind.
What About IP65?
IP65 adds full dust protection on top of water resistance. The "6" in the first position means no dust can enter the device at all. This matters if you ride on gravel, dirt trails, or dusty roads where fine particles could work their way into a less-protected light over time.
